‘Home Is a Hotel’ documentary depicts life in San Francisco’s SROs

We all know there’s an affordable housing crisis in San Francisco. Many struggling people turn to cramped single-room-occupancy hotels to try to survive.

Filmmaker Kevin Duncan Wong spent five years meeting, getting to know and filming people who live in SROs, and the resulting documentary “Home Is a Hotel” paints a unique portrait of the city.

The film, which won the documentary feature and audience awards at the 2023 SFFilm Festival, plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, and 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Roxie Theater with Wong and other guests in person. Although general admission tickets are $15, tickets for those holding SNAP/EBT cards are $5.
